Research In Motion (RIM) is the company behind what used to be the most secure and popular smartphones in businesses. In recent years however, the company started to lose market share to Apple and Google's Android, and it seemed like the company could not get back on its feet fast enough to regain what they had lost.
But now after a long redesign, the company introduced two new devices and hopes to re-enter the mobile market thanks to a lot of hardware innovations, a new operating system for its phones, and a better strategy to compete against the existing players. Renaming itself Blackberry, the company introduced the Z10 as its first contender to go head to head against the competition.
The Blackberry Z10 is a fully redesigned phone with very little in common with previous Blackberry generations. The hardware is clearly well made and looks very durable, something many business users are most likely going to applaud.
The design looks very nice and modern, and it sports a large, high resolution screen of 4.2 inches with a 1280 x 768 resolution, which gives it a pixel density of 356 ppi, which places it among other high end smartphones when it comes to screen quality. The Z10 has a rear 8MPx camera along with a front camera for video calls.
It is LTE ready with a 4G chip, and has all the expected connectivity options like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The device runs a dual-core 1.5GHz processor along with 16GB of internal storage, although an external memory card can also be added. Finally, it also comes with an HDMI port which allows presentations to be shown on a screen or larger TV.
But, the Blackberry Z10 impresses the most with the new Blackberry 10 software. Everything was redesigned here too, and as soon as it gets turned on, the first screen the user will see is a new hub. This hub is a central location where everything can be easily seen at a glance.
Users will be able to connect their Facebook, Twitter, Email and Blackberry Messaging accounts all into this one place, and all of the notifications can then be seen on that screen. It can be a much better way to keep track of multiple social networks than having to deal with separate apps.
The on-screen keyboard was also redesigned and now provides a predictive text feature. As you type, the phone will suggest words based on the letter you press. It's also clear that Blackberry has understood the importance of sharing. Now, there are sharing options everywhere you look.
It's far too early to say whether the Z10 will save Blackberry. Right now, the Canadian phone maker is drifting below 2% market share, which is far lower than their old position in the market. After many changes on the board and various technologies that failed to succeed in the market, the Z10 might be the last chance for Blackberry to survive.
From early accounts and ratings that this phone is getting in the media, it might just be such a winner.
