Samsung Galaxy S4: Will it meet demand?

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is the Korean manufacturer’s latest attempt to cement its position as smartphone market leader, but recent reports suggest the firm is struggling to meet consumer demand.

Samsung has blamed supply chain issues on an “unexpectedly” high demand for its latest device, issuing a statement saying: “due to the overwhelming global demand of Galaxy S4 the initial supply may be limited. We expect to fulfill inventory to meet demands in the coming weeks”.

When launching new devices Samsung is renowned for its aggressive marketing strategy as it continually attempts to boost its presence across the globe.

However, the US’ largest mobile network carrier Verizon has now confirmed that it doesn’t plan to sell the device until the end of May, something that, added to the reported supply problems, could put a dampener on Samsung’s ambitions.

That said, there is no ignoring the huge amount of excitement which the S4 has generated since it was announced last month, and those who have pre-registered for the device can but hope that the delay won’t be too long.

It’s not surprising that the device, which has been described by some industry watchers as “the best Android phone ever”, is proving popular. The Galaxy S4 is thinner and lighter than its predecessor, the Galaxy S III, and comes packed with a wealth of new software innovations.

Since the S III launched in May last year the firm has shipped more than 40million units of its former flagship. The S4 looks to build on this success even further with analysts predicting that Samsung will ship twice as many units, propelling the Galaxy range even further to the upper echelons of the Android and indeed smartphone market as a whole.

While Samsung might well be leading the smartphone pack now, these latest set-backs just show that the firm can’t afford to get comfortable at the top, because in such a competitive sphere anything can happen.

The launch of high-end smartphones like the S4 will always come with high risks and a similar situation arose last year when the four major network carriers in the US were forced to push back the launch of the S III due to minor delays in availability of the device.

As the saying goes, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” and the firm quickly overcame these issues and went on to sell a remarkable number of units worldwide. The S III was eventually crowned the leading smartphone during the fourth quarter of 2012, and while it’s certainly a tough act to follow the S4 is already showing signs of emulating the same journey to success.
