HTC - How A Smarphone Giant Evolved.

In recent years the HTC brand seemed to emerge on the smartphone market from nowhere. Not only did they seem to spring from nowhere but they immediately brought a range of smartphones to the table that were innovative, stylish and highly functional.

So how did they do that? What many people do not realize is that HTC (High Tech Computer Corporation) had been manufacturing smartphones and mobile phones that were rebranded for many years before they brought their own brand into the market.

Here we delve into the history of HTC and find out more about this company that appears to be talking over the reins in the smartphone industry.

Early History of HTC

HTC was spawned in 1997 when the daughter of one of the Tiawan’s richest people formed a partnership with two others. Cher Mi Wang, HT Cho and Peter Chou originally embarked on a project which had the aim of developing the mobile phone and adding features that would turn it into a personal assistant. The project floundered a little and did not really take off.

After sucking up a lot of the capital, it fell to Cher Mi Wang to draw upon the family fortune to inject enough cash to put the company back on its feet and take it in a new direction. A lot of investment went into the engineering and design departments with the aim of developing innovative ideas and technology.

This new direction was to manufacture mobile computer products that would be sold by other brands. The real progress came in around 2000 when Compaq ordered a mobile PC that had been developed by HTC. Production of mobile computing devices by HTC continued after the merger of Compaq and Hewlett Packard.

First Successes

HTC started to really hit their stride in around 2002 when they developed the first pocket personal computers that were based on the Microsoft mobile operating system. Some of the bigger wireless providers like Tmobile, Vodafone and Orange perked up and took notice of what HTC were doing and realising that the technology could at last free the mobile telephone from the constraints that they were experiencing at that time.

The Brand is Born

Much later in 2008, HTC finally came out from out of the shadows and began to put its own brand onto the market with some very innovative mobile handsets. Since then it has developed a reputation for innovation and technology. They even give employees lab facilities where anyone can go in and work through some of their own ideas

The company has a number of firsts to its name including being the first company to build a phone constructed around the Google Android operating system and also manufacturing the first phone with a 3.5” touch screen to be released in the USA back in 2002.

It is now about to move into the top 5 list of smartphone manufacturers. Their budget priced smartphones have always represented excellent value for money with great features and excellent build quality.
