Causes of Lotus Notes Error 0x1A5 and Steps to Fix it

Lotus Notes, an intelligent email application by IBM, has drawn a large number of users with its diverse features and smooth functioning. However, despite all the goodness, there are cases when Lotus Notes bogs down due to certain reasons, such as corruption.

NSF (Notes Storage File) files are the major component of Lotus Notes to store all the data of application.

However, you encounter issues when these files meet corruption or if there are other issues in the system. Problems with Lotus Notes may throw various errors that sometimes do not allow you to continue the ongoing tasks. One of the common errors is described below:

"Lotus Notes: Error 0x1A5"

Lotus Notes Error 0x1A5

Cause

When you intend to fix an error, it should be your first job to find out the exact cause of the problem. Well, there are various causes of the Error 0x1A5. You may encounter the aforementioned error due to any of the following cause:

• Missing “Directory=” parameter in the notes.ini file.
• When you run the tasks like updall, fixup, or compact on the database of a partitioned server, the error occurs.
• Corruption in NSF file as stated above.

Below section will provide solution for each of the scenarios one by one, go through it.

Resolution

Case 1:

When you try to start Domino server, you encounter the 0x1A5 error that is caused by missing “Directory=” parameter in the notes.ini file. In order to fix it, set the value of the parameter as the path of data directory on server; do it by following the given steps:

• Open notes.ini on the server.
• Add “Directory=” under “NotesProgram=” line (e.g. Directory=C:\Lotus\Domino\Data)
• Save and quit the notes.ini file.
• Start the Domino Server.

Ensure that there are not multiple notes.ini files.

Case 2:

When maintenance tasks like updall, fixup, or compact are run, you receive the error. To resolve it in this case, carry out the following steps:

• At the command prompt, go to a data directory of partitioned server.
• Run the following:

                        ..\<desired executable.exe> <desired database> <options>

Note that when you run partitioned Domino server, make sure that there is no notes.ini file in the Domino program directory. However, the notes.ini file should be there in each Domino partition's data directory.

Case 3:
When you come to the last case (i.e. NSF file corruption), it is very clear that the file has to be repaired to get access to the data contained in the file. Before performing a repair, it is necessary to know the cause of the corruption that may occur when you perform operations for data retrieval.

Some of the operations remain incomplete because the NSF file becomes inconsistent. There are many other reasons that result in NSF file corruption. Therefore, in order to repair the corrupt file, you need to use an external tool that is designed to repair the NSF file successfully.
