The Pros and Cons of Using Broadband Vs Dial-Up Internet

Dial-Up Internet
There are many different types of Internet connections. The most commonly used connection is a broadband connection that relies on your cable hookup to provide an Internet connection.

Another popular connection type is dial-up. This type of connection relies on your phone being hooked up to a modem. What are the pros and cons of these two types of Internet connection? What factors should you be looking at when you decide to either go with a broadband connection versus an old school dial-up connection?

Broadband Is Much Faster Than Dial-Up

Broadband Internet connections are much faster than dial-up connections. This is because information can be transferred much faster through a cable than through a phone line. Depending on where you are getting your service from, you can get service up to 10 times as fast as dial-up when you go with a broadband connection.

Dial-Up May Be the Only Connection Available In Certain Parts of the Country

If you live in a rural area, you may not have the option to go with broadband Internet access. Therefore, you have to make it work the best that you can. The good news is that dial-up speeds are much faster than they were years ago. If you can, you may want to rely on wi-fi or try to create a hotspot with your tablet.

Dial-Up Is Usually Cheaper Than Broadband

While dial-up Internet is much slower, it can also be much cheaper. While a broadband Internet connection may cost as much as $39.99 a month or more, a dial-up connection may only cost $9.99 a month or less. This means that you won’t have to break your budget to get basic Internet service. If all you need is a connection to check email or your Facebook page, this could be a great option for you.

Broadband Connections Don’t Require Extra Phone Lines In Your Home

If you want to be on more than one device at a time, you are going to need to install a second phone line in your home. This can add an extra expense that you don’t need while you don’t gain any extra speed for your Internet connection.  It may also be easier if you don’t use a landline telephone to make calls. Why install a phone line if you don’t need to?

Dial-Up Connections Make It Harder To Watch Videos

With a lower connection speed, there may be more lag when watching a video or listening to music online. As videos and files become larger and larger, you will need a faster Internet connection to keep up with these files. If you have to watch a video for class, you may need to stay on campus if you only have a dial-up connection at home.

If at all possible, go with a broadband Internet connection. It is faster, offers a quality Internet experience and can be cheaper and more convenient to use. You certainly won’t regret being able to use multiple devices at the same time.
