IOS 7 Introduced By Apple

Apple announced in its June 10 keynote that big changes are coming in the fall of 2013 for iPads and iPhone 4, 4S and 5 in the form of iOS 7. While it is not yet known if the hardware will see any updates, the user interface embraced by millions will be seeing its biggest facelift since the iPhone was introduced in 2008. Five of the biggest changes to iOS are explained below.

Features of iOS 7

Brighter Design

While most people seem to like the look of iOS, the new version will bring a brighter touch, starting with the elimination of patterns and textures. These will be replaced with white space and a brighter, eye-catching color scheme. The layout of familiar features, like icons and notifications, will remain the same. This change is not only pretty to look at, but may save battery life, too.

More Accessible Controls

The changes are not all on the surface. Those who do not like to go through menus to get at basic settings will be happy to see the new swipe-up feature, which operates from the phone's bottom and presents the user with easier access to controls.

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Airplane mode can be toggled as well as controls for music, volume and screen brightness. The new iOS will also include a flashlight, so users will no longer have to install a separate app for the function.

Better App Multitasking

In iOS 7, users will still need to double tap the home button to switch apps, but there will now be a fresh interface that shows a card view of the home screen inside the app. The user can easily switch views by either swiping upwards or tapping on it. There will also be more information as to what is going on with the app while it is running. Unlike more upscale Android devices, apps cannot run side by side.

New Siri Assistant

The Siri assistant, a favorite of many users, will offer the choice of both female and male voices in iOS 7. It will also reply to questions more quickly than in past versions and will present full-text results from sources such as Twitter, Wikipedia and Bing search. Siri will have a sleek new appearance and will be found in some cars starting in 2014.

Ugraded Camera Features

The camera in iOS 7 will remain the same, but its features will be seeing a big upgrade. The most obvious change will be an updated interface that allows the user to apply filters to a photo right after taking it. This is similar to the standard Android camera app and is like having a built-in Instagram.

The biggest change is the addition of AirDrop, a feature that allows users instant wireless sharing of photos with selected friends and contacts. The new iOS will include location and date-based organization of photos.

In addition to the shiny iOS 7, Apple is expected to present a new iPhone in the fall. Whether the upcoming phone will be an update to the current model or a brand new device is not known at this time. While it is not certain if all iPhone users will embrace the dramatic changes in iOS 7, it is clear that a big facelift was overdue.
