Dealing With The Fan Mail

Dealing With Fan Mail
When you first start working online and running a website or a blog then there may be many reasons that you get into it. For many of us it’s of course the allure of being able to work for ourselves and give up our day jobs, for others it’s the prospect of riches and fortune, and for other’s still it’s a passion for technology or writing.

However one of the many amazing benefits that comes from working online that not everyone does right away consider is the fan mail. If you run a website and you find yourself being a hit and getting a lot of visitors, then that’s a lot of exposure. That then in turn means that you’re communicating with a huge audience who will be familiar with your writing style, your opinions and perhaps your name and appearance – almost like a celebrity.

And not just a celebrity either, but an authority on a topic who has put themselves in a position of status as someone who is highly informed on a particular topic. This then will mean that you are likely to attract attention and find yourself with a number of ‘fans’ who write to you to praise your website or to ask you for information or advice... or even sometimes just to chat.

While this is all very good and well at first, and in fact quite exciting and flattering, after a while it can sometimes get out of control and ending up taking up a lot of your time (and your e-mail storage space). In some cases people can even get a little extreme and weird and start freaking you out a little... which can end up putting you off of having any contact with fans at all.

You don’t need to go that far, you just need to think about how you can manage this contact and avoid it getting out of hand. Here we will look at how to enjoy your fan mail and avoid getting into any stalker-like situations or losing all your time.

Make a Label, Set a Time

Organizing fan mail as it starts to mount up can be hard work, but there are various ways you can ensure that this doesn’t get on top of you. If you want to stay organized and you use Google Mail, then create a new label called ‘Fan Mail’ and drop anything related into there. Then set a time once a day, once a week or once a month even depending on how much you have, and opt to go through it then.

Do Answer
While you might think you don’t have time to answer everyone, it is very worthwhile making an effort. Not only will this ensure you have a fan for life – which is worth five minutes of your time – but it will also often lead to great things as people want to help you in return and so make great suggestions or help spread the word.

Delay

That said, you don’t need to answer right away and in fact I would advise against it. Answer immediately and that is what your visitors will come to expect of you every time, meaning that you’ll find them turning against you when you take a few days longer to get back to them. Have a delay and you’ll be able to slink off the radar.

Stay Safe
And of course it goes without saying to never pass on your personal details and not to meet up ‘in the real world’ unless you’re entirely sure it’s safe to do so.
