We spend a significant part of our lives at home and we want this time to be enjoyable; we also want to feel safe, for the household chores to be as easy as possible and saving money around the home is also important to us.

Product designers recognize these facts and use them to influence the areas of technology research in which they invest to create home-related gadgets in which we will be strongly interested and as a result purchase. Here we review five of the latest technologies that no home should be without.

Dyson DC39 Animal

Although Dyson invented the first bagless vacuum in 1978, they have continued to lead the way in the decades since, developing new technologies to help make it easier to keep our floors clean and free from dust.

The DC39 Animal uses cutting edge Radial Root Cyclone technology, which maximises suction, allowing extra dust, allergy particles and pet hair to be removed from our homes. It also makes use of ball technology, which allows it to turn easily so it is effortless to maneuver around anything that may be in its way; the ball contains the motor at its base allowing greater stability to be achieved.

Another benefit of the motor’s position is that the ball is designed to retain as much noise as possible, so others in the home are not disturbed during the weekly clean. Anyone with a dog, cat or house rabbit will know how difficult their hair can be to remove from carpets and soft furnishings, but the mini turbine head attachment makes this process simpler, as the bristles catch even the smallest hairs.

There is an additional hard floor tool, allowing the DC39 Animal to be used on all floor surfaces within the home; its shape also allows it to squeeze into the most awkward spaces.

Powertrekk fuel charger

We are all being encouraged to reduce our energy consumption around the home and are told that even small changes can all add up. This is where the Powertrekk fuel charger comes in, as it can charge any device that uses a USB - so is perfect for mobile phones, mp3 players, cameras, laptops and tablets – simply by adding a tablespoon of water to the charger.

It is able to operate using a proton exchange membrane which is able to transform the hydrogen from the water into electricity.  The process is completely safe, as the only waste product is water vapour and it has the advantage that if used away from the home, the reaction is not dependent on the condition as solar chargers are.

Morphy Richards Accents one cup hot water dispenser

How often have you filled the kettle only to make a drink for yourself? This is a waste of electricity – not to mention money – and even if you are sparing with how much water you add, the minimum level is typically at least half a litre, which will still make at least two drinks.

The Morphy Richards Accents one cup hot water dispenser provides the perfect solution, as is designed to boil between 150 and 300ml – perfect for a drink for one. It is also more time efficient, delivering boiling water within 30 seconds, so there will be no more waiting around for the kettle to boil. The device comes with a drip stand to protect your work surface.

Gateman Irevo F100 – digital fingerprint biometric door lock

Many of us will have left the house and forgotten to take our keys – or even worse lost them while we were out. However, installing a keyless door lock means that key-related issues are a thing of the past. The Gateman Irevo F100 keyless entry system can be operated by way of a pin, remote control, key or fingerprints; up to twenty fingerprints can be stored allowing all family members and regular visitors such as landlords to gain access.

A double authentication process can also be enabled. Should repeated failed entry or forced entry be attempted by someone trying to break in, a security system will be activated.

Thermador Freedom Induction Cooktop

Induction hobs are nothing new and have become a popular way to cook thanks to their quickness and efficiency in heating. However, the Thermador Freedom Induction Cooktop takes things to a new level.

No other induction hob offers a larger surface on which to cook, as rather than specific heating elements, pans can be placed anywhere, increasing flexibility and particularly useful when you are cooking more than four items. The surface is touch sensitive, so can direct the heat to where each pan is placed.

Additionally if you are only using half of the surface, a boost function allows up to 30% of the heat from the other side to be directed to where the pans are, so their contents will cook even faster.
