How to Share A Folder Over Your Broadband Network

Share Folder Over Broadband
Sharing folders over your broadband Internet connection is especially useful if you’ve got more than one computer in your home. Instead of e-mailing a document to another computer or transferring it via a storage drive, you can simply put the document in question in a shared folder.

Another user will then be able to access the contents of that folder over the network. You can share any file or folder you’d like on your computer, regardless of whether your broadband connection is wired or wireless in nature. You just have to make a few adjustments to your sharing settings. It’s also great if you want to share music, films and other media when at friend’s houses or when at work.

Step 1

Begin by enabling the sharing of files and folders on your computer via the Network and Sharing Center. To open the Windows Network and Sharing Center, open the Control Panel and select the appropriately labeled icon. The Control Panel can be accessed by clicking “Start.”

Once the Network and Sharing Center is opened on screen, click once on “Change Advanced Sharing Settings.” Select the “Turn on file sharing” option from the center of the screen and click the grey “Save Changes” button. Your computer will now be set up to share files and folders over your broadband Internet connection.

Step 2

If you want to share a single file on your computer, open the folder that the file is in and right click on it one time. If you want to share an entire folder on your computer, right click on the folder without opening it.

Step 3

Click the “Share With” button and choose the option from the context menu reading “Specific People.” From the box that appears on screen, specify the names of the computers or computer users that you want to share that file with. If you’re on your bedroom computer and want to share a folder with a computer named “Kitchen Computer,” for example, click the “Add” button in the window on screen and select the “Kitchen Computer” option.

Step 4

Click the button reading “Share.” Windows will prompt you to enter the administrator account password for your computer, which you should do at this time. Once the administrator password is entered, the specified file will be available over your broadband Internet connection to the computer in question.

Step 5

Repeat these steps to share additional files or entire folders with other computers on your broadband Internet connection.
