Should You Upgrade? The Sony Xperia T Vs. The Sony Xperia Z

Deciding whether or not to upgrade your cell phone to a newer model can be difficult. Not all upgrades are good ones, and a newer model doesn't necessarily mean that you'll get a better phone.

And even if you do get a better phone, it might not be worth the price that you have to pay to get it. But every now and again an upgrade comes along that's completely worth it, worth the hassle of changing your phone as well as worth the money that you'll pay to do it. Today we're looking at Sony's Xperia line.

Sony have just released the Xperia Z, which is an upgrade to the older Xperia T model. We put these two devices to the test, head to head, to find out how they compare and what exactly their differences are. If you're thinking about upgrading, or are choosing between these two phones, then you should read on and find out how the Xperia Z and the Xperia T are different...

What the Sony Xperia Z Does Better...

As you might expect from an upgrade, there are things that the Z does better than the T, but you might not expect just how many things it does better. The Z is the faster phone, running double the RAM of the T, making it more responsive and better able to handle running multiple processes at the same time and multi-tasking in general.

It has the larger screen, measuring in at a full five inches as opposed to the 4.6 inches on the T. The display also has two and a half times higher resolution and forty per cent more PPI (pixels per inch), making it noticeably brighter, more vivid and crisper than the display on the T.

The battery is better on the Z, which averages around twenty per cent more stand by time and sixty per cent more talk time per battery charge cycle than the T, meaning you need to charge your phone a lot less often. Newer Bluetooth support means that you get faster data transfer and that your phone uses less battery power when connecting to Bluetooth devices such as hands free.

The Z runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, rather than the 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich system run on the T. In general, a newer version of an operating system gives slightly more speed and more stability, with less chance of your phone crashing or freezing. Finally, the Z comes in around twenty per cent thinner than the T.

Really, the only thing that the T does better than the Z is that it has faster maximum data speeds. That means that the T can get quicker downloads and opens web pages faster. That's not a huge advantage, however, given that the Z has more RAM and is faster anyway.

Should I Get the Upgrade?

Definitely. The Xperia Z is a great upgrade to the T, and has a lot of new and better features. The screen quality and increased battery life alone are enough to warrant upgrading.
