Surprisingly enough, the huge jump in technology that has affected the rest of the world has had little influence on the way beds are constructed. Most beds are made with the same techniques and features as beds from over 100 years ago.
These beds are strictly designed for sleeping only, which does not align with today’s portable technology. More people use phones, play games, watch TV, and listen to music in bed than ever, but most beds do not provide support for those functions.
In the past few years, however, technology has finally started to creep into the bed market. So called “smart beds” provide more than just a sleeping space. They encapsulate a comfortable sleeping/entertainment center with support for all modern bedroom activities.
Technology does not all have to be about entertainment. Many features of technology provide benefits for health and overall well-being.
Some smart beds can keep track of your sleep cycles, such as how many times you wake up in a night, whether you snore or not, and when you enter REM sleep. These features can be helpful if you have a history of sleep problems. Smart beds may be able to replace sleep treatment centers.
Built-in Alarms
Some smart beds include automatic alarm clocks. These clocks can be set to a variety of pleasing alarm sounds that are much more pleasant than the standard grating alarm sounds. Many smart beds also have included stereo systems and music players along with the alarm system.
Entertainment Features
Many smart beds have included entertainment features, such as a built-in television, storage for portable devices, electrical plugs for charging electronics, and included radios and music players. Some beds may even have hard surfaces for studying, reading, using a computer, or even eating.
Automatic Shut-Offs
When you have a variety of entertainment features in your bed, it can be difficult to stop when it is bedtime. The smart bed can sole this problem as well. Many smart beds include automatic shut-off features that will automatically turn of a television screen or the lights surrounding the bed at a preset time.
Climate Control - Here
Always feel too hot or too cold in bed? Climate controlled beds can help. These beds can regulate the temperature of a bed for the perfect night’s sleep using internal heaters or cooling systems.
The Self-Making Bed - Here
In Japan, there is currently a bed that can make itself. Roller arms and a variety of other machines guide the sheets and blankets back in place after sleeping. This bed makes itself, so you never have to make your bed again. You will still have to change the sheets, however.
One thing we can note is that ‘’Smart Beds’’ of the near future won’t be the cost plus bed furniture we are hoping for. They will continue to serve only a small segment, and improve on today’s smart bed designs. As people catch on to the idea of multi-purpose beds and smart beds, it is likely that more beds will include these handy features.
Today, smart beds are expensive, but in the future, there will be more budget options for smart beds as smart features become standard on many bed models.
