Squanch Games has revealed that PlayStation 5 was always the main focus for High on Life 2, even though the first game launched as an Xbox-focused title. The sequel is now set to release on PS5, Xbox, and PC on February 15, marking a clear shift away from exclusivity.
In a recent interview, Squanch Games CEO Mike Fridley explained why the studio chose a multi-platform approach this time.
PlayStation Sales Drove the Decision
The original High on Life launched in 2022 on Xbox consoles and PC, with a day-one release on Game Pass. It later arrived on PlayStation in 2023 after its exclusivity period ended.
According to Fridley, the game ultimately sold the most copies on PlayStation systems, with PC (via Steam) coming in second. Based on this performance, the studio began treating PlayStation as its “lead platform” for future releases.
Game Pass Still Plays a Role
High on Life 2 will again launch on Xbox Game Pass, giving players access to the game at release without purchasing it separately.
Fridley acknowledged that Game Pass helps introduce games to a wider audience. However, he also pointed out that subscription services can reduce direct sales, a factor developers must consider.
He also suggested that recent price increases for Game Pass may have affected subscriber numbers, which could lead more players to buy the game directly on platforms like PS5 or PC.
Multi-Platform Launch Helps Reduce Costs
Another reason for moving away from exclusivity is cost efficiency. By launching on multiple platforms at the same time, Squanch Games can avoid running separate marketing campaigns for each platform, saving both time and money.
This approach also allows the studio to reach a larger audience from day one.
Changing Trends Around Xbox Exclusives
High on Life 2 reflects a broader industry trend. Microsoft has started bringing more previously exclusive titles to other platforms, and interest in Xbox among developers appears to be declining.
A recent Game Developers Conference survey showed that only around 20 per cent of developers are currently interested in supporting Xbox consoles, compared to a stronger interest in PC, PS5, and upcoming platforms like Switch 2.
What to Expect From High on Life 2
The sequel is expected to build on the original game with:
- Faster-paced combat
- Expanded gameplay systems
- More interaction with its signature talking weapons
While PS5, Xbox, and PC players will get the game in February, Nintendo players will have to wait until April 20 for their version.
Conclusion
With High on Life 2, Squanch Games is clearly moving toward a broader, multi-platform strategy. Strong PlayStation sales, rising development costs, and changing player habits are all shaping this shift.
The result is a wider release that aims to reach more players while adapting to the evolving gaming market.
