How Samsung’s Bada OS is different from other mobile operating systems

Bada operating system
Bada is Samsung’s mobile operating system for smartphones and tablet computers. The name ‘bada’ is derived from a Korean word which means ocean. It has been around for nearly ten years now powering many of Samsung’s impressive Wave mobile devices.

With its latest upgrade to the latest version, Bada 2.0, Samsung has added a host of new features that distinguish it from the other mobile operating systems in the market.

Other than the distinctive features, the very marketing strategy Samsung has employed for its Bada OS sets it apart from other popular operating systems. With its cost-effective approach with Bada, Samsung aims to break into newer mid-range smartphone market.

With the Bada operating system, Samsung wants to target a larger number of people by providing advanced technology and high performance but with the advantage of a reduced price tag.

Although a lot of the 3G-enabled Samsung smartphones run on Google’s Android operating system, the Wave S8500 was the first phone that Samsung chose to run Bada on in April 2010. Currently the most expensive Samsung phone running on Bada is the Wave III which boasts of a CPU of 1.4 GHz.

The new 3G mobile devices that will run on the Bada OS will feature an advanced multitasking feature. On most tablets and smartphones it is not possible to use more than one application simultaneously. Simply starting a number of functions or programs at once does not mean that they’re all running at the same time.

Although it depends a great deal upon how powerful the CPU of a given device is, typically the program that the user has opened at the top will be running and the ones in the background would be temporarily suspended till you switch to them.

But Bada’s multitasking feature lets the different open programs take turns at being active giving the effect of parallel action thereby making it possible to run more than one app at the same time and at similar speeds.

Bada now utilizes the Near Field Technology (NFC) that other popular operating systems like Android and Windows do. Bada 2.0 also has many new touch based functions including multipoint touch. Bada also has an improved voice command software that even lets to switch to another menu by a simple comment.

Its speech-to-text and text-to-speech feature is available in multiple languages making dictation and note-taking possible. The homescreens of Bada operated smartphones have the ability to display many more icons. A great new feature called Wi-Fi direct will allow users of Bada 2.0 operated phones to speak to each other and even share files regardless of whether they share a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Samsung also started an application store called Samsung Apps that sells apps compatible with the Bada platform. This online store currently houses about 2400 applications. Samsung is currently the foremost smartphone manufacturer in the world and sold a staggering 280 million smartphones in 2010 alone. With Bada, it plans to expand its reach and take this streak further by being technologically superior and affordable at the same time.
