Blackberry 10 Smartphone: We’re losing all our buttons.

Blackberry has finally given in to the touch screen world. The Blackberry 10 Smartphone is set to release in late January 2013. Blackberry has been reluctant to dismiss the material keyboard for quite some time.

I would assume that Blackberry has been getting by without losing the QWERTY buttons due to its mature, professional market.

Blackberry used to have quite a lot of stigma attached. It was often the ‘suits’ that used Blackberries, stereotypically the type of people who would be expected to talk loudly on the phone in crowded, public places. Self-important people who have the money to spend on overpriced phones. That is, of course, until Smartphone’s became trendy and hip, with touchscreen and games and apps.

Trendy Smartphones

With trendy Smartphone’s came the shift in opinion towards Blackberry users. The users of Blackberries now are thought to be business minded, but not ridiculous. The prospects of a touchscreen Blackberry are not without positives, though I have to admit that the idea of losing that keyboard I once thought to be so impressive is saddening. Let’s hope that Blackberry does not ditch the buttons on all devices.

For those who are sick of the Apple/Android rivalry and would still like to use a touchscreen Smartphone, the Blackberry 10 touchscreen Smartphone may be the solution. Although Blackberry both allows the use of Android applications and provides exclusive apps, the Android support doesn’t push Blackberry too deeply into the rivalry, because it’s more of a feature ‘on the side’.

Expansion of Blackberry products:

The expansion of Blackberry products does not have the best of success stories in recent years. For example, the PlayBook tablet did not sell too well shortly after it was released and received a lot of criticism, especially due to the comparatively low screen resolution and the absence of certain features. It therefore is difficult to determine whether or not the touchscreen Blackberry 10 will be on par with others of its kind.

As Blackberry has for a very long time been known as a phone that focuses on email, I would assume that the Blackberry 10 would perform well when it comes to this function. This depends on the touchscreen ergonomics, and if the touchscreen capabilities aren’t up to scratch the great email functionality of the Blackberry name will be lost.

As long as other Blackberry devices are still available with the keyboard function, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem if the Smartphone is a flop, aside from any failed profit targets and another stab at Blackberry’s pride.

It only seems logical that a mobile phone manufacturer will be offering a common piece of mobile device technology, so it is not unforeseen that Blackberry would make plans to release a touchscreen Smartphone.

I can’t help but think that it is the end of an era though; I still remember seeing a Blackberry in person for the first time when I was 16. It was so impressive to see each individual letter with a button all to itself, and it seems a shame for this feature to become a thing of the past.
