A Brief Guide To The Android Operating System

The mobile phone market has moved so fast over recent years that many are left bamboozled by all the new terminology and features. Never before have phones been so complicated. 2012 saw worldwide sale of smart phones reach 45 % of the overall phone market, 8% up on 2011.

More of us, young and old, are opting to go for a high-tech phone but do we really understand our choices when face with a range of phones to select from? This brief guide will give you the lowdown on what Android is.

What is Android?

Android is an operating system used by phones and tablets. It is the platform for the software that many devices have installed. It is the Google operating system. Google has not closed the operating system for use by only its own phones.

Instead they have chosen to allow other manufacturers to use it. Therefore you will find phones from HTC to Samsung using Android. The variety of phones available on Android is massive; there is a phone to suit every budget. Android is constantly getting better and each new release has a series number and some have funny names.

What are the Benefits of Android?

The way Google has opened up Android to programmers means there are literally hundreds of thousands of applications available (around 700,000 at last count). Users can go to Google play and search for an app to do just about anything.

You may not find one to make you a cup of tea but you will probably find one to tell you which brand of tea is the best to drink. Android 4.0 even uses facial recognition security technology. How far have phones come? There really are Android phones in every price range. The choice is largely driven by budget and what you want your phone to achieve.

At the top end of the market four of the best phones on Android are the Samsung Galaxy Note II, Samsung Galaxy S III and Sony Xperia T and the Google Nexus 4. All are cracking phones in terms of aesthetics and usability.  You will notice that Samsung is featured twice out of the four; well they had an incredible 2012 and are doing a lot of tings right in the mobile market at the moment.

So there you have it, Android in a nutshell. With Google getting every more serious about their own handsets, the last in partnership with LG, this great operating system looks set to keep getting better.
There are now millions of phones and tablets in circulations running Android platforms.

I would hazard a guess that most of the users don’t really understand what Android is. Now you are a step ahead of most of them. Go forth and educate those around you!
