This year's E5 Gaming Expo heralded the launch of two new console gaming systems: the Microsoft Xbox One and the Sony Playstation 4. These systems have finally been unveiled, but won't be available for purchase until the holiday shopping season later this year.
Until E3, the only information we had was limited to hearsay and speculation; now we can do a head-to-head comparison of these systems, and see if a clear winner emerges.
In terms of storage, both systems offer 500 GB hard drives. PS4 provides the ability to upgrade the hard drive; while Xbox One doesn't allow that, it does give the option of adding an external hard drive via USB.
Another similarity lies in the systems' choice of CPU: Both Microsoft and Sony went with AMD eight-core processors for their new systems. AMD also makes an appearance in both Xbox and PS4's graphics processors. These state-of-the-art GPUs will bring the next generation of graphics to console gaming.
Sony and Microsoft took a subtle approach when redesigning their controllers for these new systems. While both controllers have been tweaked in terms of sensitivity, precision and comfort, no radical changes have been made in their designs.
The new Xbox One controller does have the much-hyped addition of "rumble triggers", which enhances Xbox gameplay with a whole new level of sensory experience. Gamers can literally feel the sensation of a rumbling helicopter or a bumpy road race as they play with this controller.
Sony's controller also debuted a new feature: the "Share" button, which allows gamers to share replays and other content across the PS network.
Neither system has an ongoing dependence on internet access. However, it is really easy to find
internet deals. Gamers who use the PS4 do not need to be connected to the internet unless they are specifically playing games online or downloading games.
Xbox One originally had an "always online" requirement: If your Xbox disconnected from the internet for more than 24 hours, your games would stop working. In the wake of negative consumer feedback, Microsoft dropped this requirement, so that no internet connection is needed after the initial system setup.
Impressive game lineups are already in place for both systems. Some highlights from Xbox's lineup are: Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct, Titanfall and the latest installment of Halo. Sony showcased titles such as Final Fantasy XV, Diablo III and the newest sequel to Assassin's Creed. PS4 will also be welcoming Destiny, a buzzed-about hybrid of first-person shooter and MMORPG elements.
Looking at these two systems side-by-side, it seems like the notion of a "winner" is tough to call. Xbox One has positioned itself as an all-in-one entertainment center, bringing you TV, music and gaming from one console.
However, PS4 is the slightly cheaper option at $399, compared to the $499 price tag on Xbox One. Neither Microsoft nor Sony has changed their controllers much, so most gamers will stick with loyalties that were already formed. Which one do you think you'll be shopping for later this year?
