Everything was going smooth in the smartphone market with very powerful devices to be seen and then all of a sudden they weren't the best out there any more. There was a new crop of devices, the ones that boast of 64 bit chipsets.
It started with apple bringing in the iPhone 5S with 64 bit chipset. It was inevitable that android will rise against it and it did. Soon after the Apple device came out, 64 bit became the buzz word and everyone wanted phones with 64 bit processor.
A 64 bit system will allow the manufacturers to use more memory on the devices (more than 4 GB) and will double the bandwidth for addressing memory. It can fetch more data in every CPU cycle as compared to 32 bit systems.
All this coupled with good software support can result in better performance for high end chipsets. There could be no significant difference for low and mid range hardware. Here are some of the Android devices that are on sale or will go on sale soon with 64 bit chipsets.
This device was showcased recently at the CES and it comes with a powerful Intel hardware. It uses the Intel Merrifield chipset with the quad core processor capable of 2.3 GHz clock speed coupled with 4 GB of RAM. It has got a 5.5 inch full HD display and gets a 13 megapixel primary camera. the device will come with support for 4G networks as well and is expected to come out in a couple of months.
HTC One M8 is a great device. It has got a beautiful design and packs in powerful hardware to give the best of both worlds. Now it is due for an upgrade and going by the news that is floating around, it is going to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset. Snapdragon 810 is a 64 bit chipset with two quad core processors running at different clock speeds.
This would be another device powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset. The Snapdragon 810 is going to power most of the new flagship device that we see this year. The G4 is going to improve upon the already impressive LG G3.
It might come with a display resolution higher than QHD and with a 20 megapixel primary camera with optical image stabilisation and laser auto focus. It was in news that LG is having some issues with the chipset but it was later reported that they have worked around it. The device is still a couple of months away and should come out sometime around May this year.
Need a relatively affordable Note 4 alternative? This is the device to consider then. It features a 5.7 inch QHD display giving you 515 ppi pixel density. The display uses Sharp’s negative display tech to make it power efficient.
It uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 64 bit chipset and has got 4 GB of RAM. It gets dedicated audio processor and amp chips. The primary camera is a 13 megapixel Sony camera with optical image stabilisation. It has an aluminium body which is just 7 mm thick.
The Chinese vendor Oppo is also planning to make a move in the 64 bit war. So while everyone is preparing their 64 bit warhorses, they can’t be left behind. They are coming up with the Oppo Find 9 which is going to be a large device powered by Snapdragon 810 chipset. Along with the Snapdragon 810 chipset, it will have 4 GB of RAM. Other details aren’t available yet but they will be good enough the complement the display and chipset.
Sony has been using Qualcomm chipsets on most of its devices and the Z4 is not going to be an exception. Some reports suggest that it will come in two different variants, both powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset. One variant will come with 1080p display and 3 GB of RAM while the other one with QHD display and 4 GB RAM. It might come with a new 21 megapixel camera sensor with phase detection autofocus and 192 AF points.
Motorola might soon come up with a new large screen device with spec sheet even more impressive then the Nexus 6. While the Nexus 6 uses a Snapdragon 805 chipset, the new device will come with Snapdragon 810 chipset and 4 GB of RAM. Reports suggest a 5.8-5.9 inch QHD display. The camera resolution will also go up and it might make use of the Moto Maxx camera unit.
This is an impressive smartphone by the Indian manufacturer Micromax. It runs the Snapdragon 615 chipset with two quad core processors. It gets 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. It has got a 5.5 inch semi HD display and a 13 megapixel primary camera.
The Galaxy A7 is an impressive device running Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset with two quad core processors like the previous device in this list. There is another version as well for the LTE only variant which uses an Exynos chipset. The device looks stylish by Samsung standards and they have used fair bit of metal here. It comes with an excellent 5.5 inch full HD AMOLED display, a 13 megapixel primary camera, 5 megapixel secondary camera, 16 GB internal storage and 2600 mAh battery.
This device offers specifications similar to the Yu Yureka. It has got a 5.5 inch 720p display which isn’t very sharp but does the job. It comes powered by the Snapdragon 615 chipset with twin quad core processors paired with 2 GB of RAM. It comes with 16 GB internal storage with micro SD card slot. It has a primary camera of 13 megapixels. Powering this device is a 2600 mAh battery. It also comes with HTC’s DotView case.
