Below is brief explanation of all three color icons.

Grey - Website has no identity information

Blue - Website has basic identity information

PhotobucketIf the Site Identity Button is blue then it means that the website's domain is verified and the connection is encrypted between the server and Firefox and therefore protected from/against eavesdroppers.

When a domain is verified, it means that the people running the website have bought a certificate which proves that they own the domain. For example, the Orkut website has this type of certificate and has an encrypted connection, so it displays blue Site Identity Button. When you click the Site Identity Button, it tells you that the Orkut website is verified to be part of google.com as certified by Thawte Consulting (Pty) Ltd.
