With some new technologies, however, these regions may be able to start seeing significant improvements. Here are four technologies that could revolutionize the world's poorest countries.
1) New Agricultural Products and Techniques
In the early 1940s, Mexico imported much of its food. With a few technological improvements and the use of hybrid seeds, Mexico quadrupled is food output. Today, much of the world's food is grown in Mexico. For some regions, the main issues stem from their inability to grow enough food and being dependent upon external locations.
Improving a country's farming infrastructure can improve its food stability and allow its government to focus on other areas necessary to escape for a cycle of poverty. Further, food stability often leads to political stability and can even end sectarian violence and wars.
2) The Internet
The Internet have revolutionized developed society. Its greatest impact, however, might be seen in poor regions. One of the best ways for a country to rise above poverty is to educate its younger citizens, and the Internet provides access to the information necessary to educate a population. Nations can provide a high level of education without needed to rely on expensive resources from the developed world.
Further, 3G towers are providing Internet access at a low cost, and these towers are being installed at a tremendous rate. As the cost of computer equipment drops, many poor nations will subsidize the cost of small, portable computers and tablets that can be used in an educational setting.
3) Cheap Desalination Techniques
Water is a crucial resource. People require a large amount of water to survive, and countless industries rely on it. Many poor nations, however, do not have reliable supplies of fresh water they can depend on. One option that has existed for years is to convert salt water into fresh water; the disadvantage of this strategy, however, is the high price it demands.
It is prohibitively expensive in developed nations and unrealistic in poor countries. New technological improvements, however, could change the calculation. If poor nations near an ocean can cheaply convert salt water into fresh water, the issues of water security could end quickly.
4) Cheap Power Production
Coal is the standard source of cheap power throughout the world. Many regions, however, do not have access to cheap coal and either have to import it at a high cost or use more expensive energy-generating technologies. New advances, however, may change this. China and other countries are developing small, cheap nuclear power plants that use standardized parts to operate at a much lower cost.
These plants can allow smaller nations to have long-lived, sustainable sources of energy. Additionally, the cost of solar panels is dropping every year. Today, the most expensive part of creating a solar plant is the cost of labor. In poor nations, the cheap cost of labor may make these plants the cheapest option available in a few years. With a reliable source of power, nations can develop the social and industrial infrastructure necessary to create significant economical growth.
The technologies that will cause a revolution in the world's poorest countries may not have been invented yet. It is possible that the tools necessary to transform the world's most poverty-stricken regions may exist only in the mind of inventors or engineers.
