5 Surprising Things That Could Set Off Security Metal Detectors

Here you are preparing to go to the airport, school, or mall. When you finally arrive and are forced through the security metal detectors, you suddenly hear those familiar beeping sounds that instantly get everyone’s attention on you.

And there you are embarrassed and wondering what could have set it off. Perhaps these could be the offenders…

A List of Surprising Problems

1: Clip-in hair extensions. With these things, you might have to take your chances. Some ladies who are fond of clip-ins said that there are times when the alarm would go off, and then there are times when nothing really happens. If they do set off the alarm, just be honest with the security officials about wearing clip-in hair extensions.

2: Excess iron in the blood. Don’t get your hopes up. This is a very rare case, people. The individuals who can most likely use this excuse are those with a specific gene mutation called “hemochromatosis.” Unlike those without this condition, hemochromatosis sufferers absorb as high as 30% of iron from food.

There are also other things that can cause iron overload in the body. To rule out the possibility, take the necessary blood tests. If you’re already diagnosed with hemochromatosis, make sure to have your doctor’s note with you when traveling or going somewhere that has security metal detectors.

3: Under-wire bra. Well, just ask Nancy Kates about this. When she arrived at Oakland International Airport, her bra set off the security walk-through metal detector, thus subjecting her under the careful scrutiny of the TSA officials.(1) If you don’t want to be in the same awkward situation, you might want to trade off your metal underwire bra with another.

4: Candies and cigarette packs. Well, at least it’s their aluminum foil wrappers that are the real culprits. They—including other packed products with aluminum wrappers—are just the victims. That’s why manufacturers solved this problem by switching to paper wrappers.
If you must have your cigarettes or chewing gum, you might just want to place them in your bags to be checked. Or you could transfer them to a non-metallic case minus the aluminum foil.

5: Badge. Well, this is hardly surprising. But many people often have a bad case of amnesia that they forget to take off their metal badge from their clothes. It’s the same thing with metal pens, clips, jewelry, and loose coins.

Security metal detectors can be overly sensitive, so you might want to make sure to inspect your clothes, belonging, and body for possible objects that could unnecessarily set off that darn security walk-through and handheld metal detectors. In that way, you’ll save yourself from the embarrassment and delay.

If you have a pacemaker, prosthetic, and metal implants, secure a medical certificate from your doctor, so you don’t have to waste your time explaining to security officials, especially if they don’t speak your language.
