Moving Website Domains
This post lists six top tips for webmasters and site owners to follow when moving their website to a new domain host.

Making the Move

Having taken the decision to change your domain host, you will naturally want the move to go as smoothly as possible. Even the smallest glitch has the potential to have a massive impact on search rankings and business performance, so you will want everything planned well in advance and in order.

What are the six most vital considerations you need to make?

1. Travel Off-Peak

If your site gets most of its visitors between 6 – 10pm, then make sure you move it outside of these hours. In fact, research when your site has the least level of traffic, and do it then, regardless of what time it is. This is the easiest way to ensuring your site does not get affected too much. A handful of people not being able to use your site is still too many for your perfect service mantra, but it is a damn sight more attractive than hundreds, or even thousands, of people not being able to find you.

2. Stop Marketing

By this we mean email marketing specifically. If you are moving your domain tomorrow, the last thing you want to be doing today is sending out a great deal that will drive a 50% increase of traffic to your site. Hold back and wait until you have moved and you are sure the new domain can handle it, then move forward.

3. Stop PPC

In the same manner as sending out emails, if you continue with PPC you are sending your potential clients up a blind alley, giving them a link to somewhere that is not prepared to deal with them yet. Put PPC on hold for now, and as soon as your site is back running smoothly, start it again.

4. Give it Time

To you, changes to your website are obviously instant. Bear in mind that search engines and other browsers may need up to 24 – 48 hours before they start seeing the changes, so keep calm if your traffic does not rocket by 75% in the first day as you anticipated it would.

5. Stay Online

Switching domains should be as simple as moving your information from one server to the other, then pointing DNS to the new site, and off you go. Of course, life is not always that simple, so if you do need to go offline at any stage, try and plan ahead and make sure it is for no longer than an hour. If you get this part of your domain switch wrong, you will have some serious work to do to regain search trust and ranking!

6. Have Support

To make the process as easy as possible, have the professionals on hand to help. When switching domains, try and find a quality host that will also take care of the move for you. This will allow your stress levels to remain as low as possible during your move, and continue focusing on your core business.
