Five Great Careers In Engineering

Careers In EngineeringWhen someone tells you that they’re an engineer, what do you think it is that they do?  If the phrase “engineer” conjures up impressions of overalls and calculators, then you have a rather out of date idea of what the field of engineering involves!

Today, engineering jobs are some of the highest paid, most interesting, and most exciting jobs out there.  Here’s a look at five of the most exciting engineering related career options available today:

Aerospace Engineering

Aerospace engineers work on everything from passenger planes to military vehicles.  They are responsible for building, testing, and maintaining vehicles for civilian and military use.  If you’re fascinated by things that fly (and really, who isn’t?), then you’ll find that this is an incredibly exciting job.  You’ll need a degree, and a good background in either physics, or technical drawing, to get started in this field.

Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineers work more with biology and chemistry than they do with math and physics.  Their job is to develop solutions to environmental problems such as water pollution, recycling, waste disposal, and public health.  This isn’t the most glamorous of fields, but it’s great for people that want to solve important real-world problems, and the entry level pay is pretty good.

Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical engineers are the pioneers that combine their knowledge of biology and medicine with engineering techniques to create devices that can solve common medical and health related problems.  Biomedical engineers have come up with countless life-saving procedures and devices that improve the quality of life of people with a huge range of medical conditions.

Chemical Engineering

Chemical engineers have had a huge impact on our way of life.  Inventions and designs created by chemical engineers are the basis of many things that we use, including clothing, food, electronic products, and even paper.  While most people wouldn’t think of chemical engineering as being important on a day-to-day basis, the truth is that without chemical engineers, our daily lifestyle would be far different from how it is right now.  Even the fertilizer that is used to grow our food is made using processes designed by chemical engineers.

Civil Engineering

Almost every building that you see, and every piece of infrastructure that you rely on each day, was designed and built by civil engineers. Civil engineers are responsible for the development of roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, water and sewage systems power generators, and other vital pieces of infrastructure.

This means that you can blame civil engineers for the cold jetways at the airport, and the impossibly complicated gate structure that takes you forever to navigate.  However, you should also commend them for designing an airport that allows so many planes to take off safely, and be glad of their skills every time you take a shower, or turn on a light.

If you are interested in a career in engineering, you will need to pursue a training course.  Most engineering disciplines require either a HND or a degree even for an entry level position.  However, in the long term, the rewards of pursuing such a career will make it all worthwhile.
