Why You Should Be Using Google Drive More

Although, Google Drive has been around for a quite a few months now it hasn't managed to really dent Dropbox's market share. When Google Drive was first released many questioned the update, as most were pretty content with Google Documents.

But like with most Google new service releases there's a period of getting more acquainted with the product or service. Google+ is the perfect example of this, when it first came out people were dismissive, but when people saw that this wasn't going to be a fly-by-night creation this soon changed their perceptions. So the question remains will it be the same for Google Drive?

Perhaps one of Google Drive's impediments since its launch in April was its App, but a recent update to this has addressed this issue. The recent update has bought document editing to iOS, finally I hear Apple users proclaim! This enables collaborators to use the service regardless of whether they're on a device which uses Android or iOS.

Also, Android users will find the update has incorporated some pretty neat features such as pinch to zoom in document editing, folder support and the ability to browse folder content by file type, plus the ability to capitalize on Google Cloud Print and an improved Google Presentation. I personally use the Google Drive application for Mac OS X and have no complaints.

It quickly synced all my local files to my account, and gives you a status on how much space you've got left of the allocated 5GB. I'm not too bothered about the space as currently I haven't even used a GIG of space on my Drive account, but Google Drive is certainly more competitive than Dropbox when it comes to storage - the latter giving just 3.25GB (unless you get some referral sign ups you can get more).

I've yet to use the Dropbox app, which comes packaged with many Android smartphones. There are some complaints from users online that it could do with an update for the iPhone, and you can't perform batch downloads which is surely a frustration to many users. It's just a shame that Google Nexus 7 couldn't package some Drive freebies (as a recent Nexus 7 owner, this was a slight disappointment).

Google Drive is continue to develop and improve. There are many third party extensions (found searching via Docs) which makes creation and collaboration of documents very appealing. The new folder creation system is very intuitive and easy to use. It does take sometime working where things have been moved, if you were a regular Google Docs user.

Of course there's still some legacy materials from Google Docs which need to be translated to Drive, but on the whole Google have anticipated most problems users would have encountered. The support forums are worth checking out still, if you run into any difficulty. If Google Drive continues in the right direction, it won't be long before more people ditch Dropbox.
