YouTube Back on IPhones after Mobile Feud Cools

If you updated your iPhone to iOS 6 you would have been disappointed to find that YouTube had been removed and replaced by an Apple alternative. This is because Apple and Google are essentially at war in the mobile market and neither one wants to give their opposition a leg up by providing them with a platform for their software or in Google's case by providing its opponent with its best applications.

YouTube had previously been included in every Apple update since 2007. However in the most recent upgrade not only was the app not included as a default application, it wasn't even available to download from the App Store.

This along with the fact that Apple maps is notoriously bad caused many to not want to upgrade the iPhone until Apple again included Google applications. Fortunately for those people YouTube has again been given access rights meaning that after the next update, you tube will again be available. Though it's still not clear whether or not it will be included as a default application

Despite being opponents the relationship between Google and Youtube is mutually beneficial. Google benefit enormously from having access to Apple's 1 million users while Apple benefits from having access to Google's popular and user-friendly applications. What this truce shows is that the two companies have realised that they need each other and it's better for them both if they try and get along.

The YouTube App which is returning to the iPad is not the same one that was removed with the last update. It has been significantly updated and is now faster and more intuitive according to Google. iPad owners will be pleased to know that the new YouTube app has been specifically designed for iPads.

When held in landscape position users will get a full YouTube experience with sidebar included. Previously iPad users had to put up with a larger version of the mobile application. The new iPad application also allows users to create playlists intuitively and gives them access to nearly all the features available to PC users.

The voice recognition has also been significantly improved. You can now search with either your voice or by using the traditional method. You can also subscribe to channels simply by saying subscribe. The new application is supposedly more usable and has faster reaction times.

However during initial testing there wasn't a very noticeable difference. While there may have been minor improvements in the apps responsiveness, Apple's overall responsiveness is so good that there isn't much area left to improve and hence noticing small differences can be difficult.

The new app has received praise from most both for its design and features however most are just happy that they can watch YouTube videos on their iPhones again. While YouTube could always be accessed via the Internet on an iPhone it just wasn't the same not having the YouTube application.
