Over the years SEO has changed and it’s even more vital to actually know what metrics matter. Getting caught up in the wrong metrics will often mean that you’ll be subject to losing sight of your goals.

You should know exactly what matters if you’re looking to increase your traffic month on month. Below are 3 things that many SEO’s get caught up in when looking to increase their traffic.

PageRank

Even though PageRank gives you a good idea of how well a page is doing and how many links it’s had, it’s not something you should worry about too much. Getting caught up in how much page rank your homepage has will often make you lose the bigger picture.

Google ranks websites by Pages so even if your homepage has a high PageRank it won’t mean much for your other pages. You should rather just focus on writing good content and acquiring good links to ensure your pages rank better than anything else.

Page Authority

Page Authority was a phrase coined by the popular OpenSiteExplorer tool by SEOmoz. This tool tells you how authoritative Google sees it. By looking at it you will often find the very large sites such as MSN and Amazon of having extremely high scores. This is mainly due to their extremely large presences across the web.

It has been found that there are many different types of websites that have a low authority rank but actually rank high. You should always consult the search engines for your ranking. The search engines are where you get your traffic so if you’re doing well there you will have very little to worry about.

Keyword Density

Back in the old days keyword density was the key to the top search engine rankings. Due to this, you would find many webmasters stuffing their sites with many different keywords hoping to rank. This worked for a while as Google helped them rank for many phrases, however today it’s mainly ineffective.  In fact it can often give you a nice little Google slap and get you de-indexed.

Some webmasters to this day recommend putting in a certain amount of keywords to get the right ‘density’. However this SEO practice doesn’t work much today. As long as you have the keyword within the text and placed in the title you are placing a good foundation.

As long as you are writing interesting and relevant content then you should have no problem actually getting links. In today’s marketplace good links are the gold standard and is what every webmaster should hope to achieve.

When you try and do things for the sole purpose of rankings it can often hurt them, so it’s important to know exactly what you need to avoid. Besides this, knowing exactly what metrics matter is just as important. Be sure to always offer value to your target audience, and the search engines will reward you with your hard earned traffic.
