Sony recently announced the launch of the Xperia L and the Xperia SP, smartphones that are specifically meant to cater to the needs of low and mid range markets. Of these the low-end Xperia L sports a 4.3-inch display screen that has a resolution of 854 X 380, which may sound a bit on the lower side for a smartphone.

However, the phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 plus, a dual core processor that has 1Gigahertz along with 1 Gigabyte of random access memory. The battery with 1,700 mAh is expected to run a good 7 to 8 hours.

The other notable specifications would include the back facing camera of 8 MP with 720p video recording capabilities. The second camera is a 0.3MP front-facing snapper, which can just manage to take some pictures.

The 8 Gigabyte internal storage is quite impressive and the microSD card slot provides for any expansion, if required. The Near Field Communication comes along with the regular censors that complete the portfolio.

The Xperia L runs the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean along with Sony’s own app suite. The phone is quite handy as it measures just 128.7 mm in length and 65mm in width and has a thickness of just 9.7 mm and weighs around 137g.

The handset will be available in just three basic colors, white, black and red. It is expected to hit the markets in the second quarter of 2013. Though there is no information about the price, it is expected to be priced reasonably, as it targets the low-end market.

The Xperia SP, which belongs to the mid-range, has more impressive specifications. The difference commences in the display itself as it sports a 4.6-inch display screen with a resolution of 1280 X 720 which is common with most mid-range smartphones.

It is powered by a 1.7 Gigahertz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor along with Adreno 320 Graphics card. The random access memory is the same at 1 Gigabyte, which is quite adequate. The battery though, is expected to last longer as it is 2, 300 mAh, and should last a good 10 hours.

Coming to the snappers, the back facing camera has 8MP and has the same video recording capabilities. The internal memory too matches the 8 GB that is provided in the lower end model, along with the microSD card slot that lets you expand the memory if required.

The HSPA+, which is the 4G LTE connectivity, and the Near Field Communication are also similar to what features in the lower-end model. There are the extra censors along with the magnetometer and gyroscope, that somewhat complement the rest of the portfolio.

Just as in the Xperia L, the Xperia SP too sports the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean alongside the app suite from Sony. As to the dimensions, it is slightly longer at 130.6mm and wider too at 67.1mm and a wee bit thicker at 9.98mm.

The Xperia SP tips the scales at 155g and is a bit heavier than the Xperia L. There is a slight difference in the color choices too, and it comes in White Silver, Red, and Black. The phone is expected to hit the markets sometime in the middle of 2013.
