Wondering to see this error? Yes, your users happen to face such situation while adding attachments to an email in MS Outlook 2010.
Sometimes, it is required to add large or multiple attachments to emails, but user faces a failure when the size of attachments exceeds the defined limit and it just takes a few seconds for you to get calls from your users.
In this case, you are solely responsible for fixing the issue as early as possible. The post discusses aspects of the problem and provides you the appropriate solutions. Let's proceed to learn.
• As you know that Outlook allows you to configure it for both Exchange mail account and Internet email account. If Outlook 2010 is configured for an Internet email account, the prescribed size limit for attachments is 20 MB or 20480 KB. If size of the attachment you have added exceeds 20 GB, the error occurs.
• On the other hand, if you have configured Outlook for Exchange server, the limit for attachments is 10 MB or 10240 KB. Note that the default limit in this case is not related to the attachment limit defined in Internet email account. Moreover, administrator is allowed to set Exchange mailbox limits by going to 'Transport Setting Properties' and selecting required settings in 'Maximum send size' option.
• Open Registry Editor.
• Search the following subkeys of registry and select any of them:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Preferences
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Preferences
(If you don't find the path, create it manually.)
• Under the selected subkey, add:
Value type: DWORD
Value name: MaximumAttachmentSize
Value data: Maximum allowed attachment size.
Please note if you don't want to specify any limit for attachment, keep the value '0' (zero) or you can specify a value less than the defined limit, i.e. 20 MB.
• Close Registry Editor
• Open Outlook.
• Open the Exchange Management Console.
• Under the option 'Organization Configuration', click on 'Hub Transport'.
• Switch to the tab 'Global Settings' and click on 'Transport Settings'.
• In the 'Actions' pane, click 'Transport Settings', and then click 'Properties'.
• A dialog box 'Transport Settings Properties' will appear, navigate to the 'General' tab, and then specify a value in 'Maximum send size (KB)'.
• Click 'OK'.
This is how you can easily fix the problem. However, as you saw that you need to make changes in the registry in case of Internet email account, it is necessary to carry out the steps carefully. It is better to take a backup copy of registry before making changes because if something goes wrong, you can simply restore the registry from backup. Also, read more about backing up, restoring, or modifying the registry.
