Why You Want A Galaxy Note 3 Next?

While there has been a lot of fuss recently over the new iOS and the latest 'poor man's' version of the iPhone, we shouldn't forget what Samsung has been doing over the last few weeks.

In fact Apple's biggest rivals are also currently poised to make a new hardware release in one of their most high-profile and competitive product lines. The Galaxy Note 3 is on the way folks, and from where I'm standing it blows anything Apple has been doing lately out of the water. Let's take a look at why you should stand up and take notice…

The Latest Note

When Samsung released their first Note device, they effectively created an entirely new product category. While the Dell Streak was arguably there first, this was the first high profile launch of a 'phablet' device that straddled the line between smartphone and tablet. Commentators then wondered how this was likely to go down and a lot of questions were asked with regards to how practical it would be and whether there was a market for it…

And then the device took off…

Partly this was due to the inclusion of a stylus that made tasks like signing documents a whole lot easier, and partly it was due to some impressive specs that made this a true high-end device. Then came the Note 2 which improved on every single aspect giving the device even more power, a truly huge battery and multitasking features to take full advantage of the phone's large screen - once again Samsung had a hit on their hands.

Now they are about to release the Note 3, and once again it brings with a slew of improvements over previous models. The specs have received another boost which makes the device one of if not the most powerful on the market (with 3 Gigabytes of RAM!) and while it has also received a bigger screen while actually managing to make the device smaller.

Then there's the 'leather look' back and the 'pages' effect that make the device look like a sleek notepad, and a slew of new software features including Samsung's version of 'tiny apps' and device-wide searching. It's truly a marvel.

Why You Should Care

But just listing the specifications of a device isn't going to make it interesting to anyone other than tech geeks. What's really interesting is how you can use these devices in your everyday life. As someone who has owned both notes and a slew of more powerful Android devices, let me tell you what owning one is like.

Say for instance you take a photo of something and want to share it. Normally now your options would be fairly limited, but with a Note device you can use the Stylus to annotate and cut out sections of the picture to share.

This allows for more personal and humorous messages if you have something like WhatsApp installed, and you'll find that it comes in handy surprisingly often. And it's also worth bearing in mind that writing and drawing is a million times better with the stylus in general.

If you like doodling then there are plenty of apps that will greatly benefit from a real stylus input (as opposed to a capacitive stylus which is no better than a finger really) and these can be a lot of fun. If you're among the few who still place 'Draw Something' then you'll be able to make far more elaborate and exciting sketches.

More to the point though, owning a Note means being able to run tablet-quality games on your phone which means things like GTA3 in your pocket. Add to that the large screen (which will now be HD) and you have a wonderful device for viewing films and playing games.

Basically the Note 3 isn't quite a phone or a tablet, but what it is is the best of both worlds. It's not too large to fit into a pocket easily, and all the pen features make it incredibly handy for taking notes, doodling or sharing pictures.

Unlike other phones that make the claim this really is a 'life companion' and the Note 3 looks set to take that further still. Add in the cover that shows the time and notifications on your lock screen, and the cool smartwatch designed specifically for the device, and you have a very awesome piece of kit.
