Before we get into what you can do to decrease the bounce rate on your website, it is important to clear up what bounce rate actually is, both for those who are encountering this term for the first time and also for those who are not entirely sure that they know what bounce rate is.

Bounce rate is simply the percentage of people who come to your website, just to leave it seconds later without opening any other page on your website or doing anything there. These people are gone and they will never return or convert on anything. You can imagine how important it is to reduce the number of such visitors and thus reduce the bounce rate.

We will start with the more theoretical and comprehensive ways of decreasing the bounce rate on your website. Perhaps the most pertinent of these and perhaps also the most logical of these is meeting the expectations of your visitors.

If they are led to believe that they will find a certain product or certain piece of information on your website and they find out that it is no there, they will leave and never dream of coming back. It would also be a good idea to increase your social media presence and to use social media to your advantage, informing people about what you do/offer, etc. Believe it or not, social media is still working for you.

And then there are the more practical things that you can do in order to reduce the bounce rates and we will talk in more detail about these because they are applicable this moment. Believe it or not, most of it boils down to not being lazy and not being a jerk. It is as easy as that.

Perhaps the most annoying thing in the entire web experience are pop-up ads. In fact, it is a wonder that they exist any longer. People are simply blind to them and that is the best case scenario. The worst case scenario and a more probable one is that they will automatically leave your website. In addition to this, make sure that you are avoiding standard ad units. They will also be overlooked or even incur penalties from Google Rank.

You should also work on the navigation on your website. If you are not sure that it is done properly then it is not done properly. People need clear navigation or they will feel dumb. And when they feel dumb, they leave.

Please, for Christ’s sake, speed up your website. No one wishes to watch a page load for ten seconds. Also, try and have a website that does not look like it was designed by someone who has seen a mouse and a keyboard for the first time. People have started to expect a certain level in design and they do not like ugly stuff. It is not tolerated any longer. Make your website mobile usable.

This is just scratching the surface. The easiest way to reduce the bounce rate is to imagine yourself being the visitor of your website. What it is that you would like to see? What it is that you would like to avoid? What it is that you would expect from such a website?
