Samsung Galaxy S4 - Features, Specifications and Availability

Yesterday, Samsung unveiled its newest flagship phone - the Samsung Galaxy S4, at its Unpacked 2013 event at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The phone comes with significant upgrades over last year's flagship - the Galaxy S3, which went on to become the best-selling smartphone in the world. Let’s do a quick overview of the features and specs of the latest offering from Samsung.

Design:

Like all the Galaxy series phones, the Galaxy S4 is also built entirely from polycarbonate plastic. However, it is tougher than the one used on the Galaxy S3 so the phone feels much sturdier and solid in the hand. However, it is still a no match for the premium aluminum casing of the iPhone 5 and the HTC One.

In terms of dimensions, it measures 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm and has a rounded corners and sloping edges, which make it comfortable to hold. Although it's larger that the S3, Samsung has managed to make it extremely slim and sleek. You won't have any trouble slipping in down your pockets. At 130 grams, it's also the most lightweight 5-inch smartphone in the market.

Display:

The Samsung Galaxy S4 flaunts a gorgeous 5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 X 1080 pixels, which equates to 441 ppi. The screen has crisp, sharp and vibrant image quality with excellent viewing angles, and sunlight legibility.

The phone automatically adjusts the brightness and contrast settings of the display with the help of sensors to give you a high quality viewing experience. Furthermore, users can operate the touchscreen even with their gloves on or by waving your hands over the display.

To protect the screen against scratches and cracks, Samsung has added a layer of Corning's toughened Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

Camera:

The most impressive hardware feature is the primary 13-megapixel camera with autofocus support and an LED flash. The company has included a new camera interface which is heavily influenced from the Galaxy Camera. There are lots of exclusive features like dual-shot and recording mode, sound & Shot, Drama Shot, Cinema photo, Eraser Mode and much more.

The front-facing camera has a 2.1 megapixel sensor which can be used HD video recording and portrait shots. It is also required for the dual shot mode and the eye tracking and hand tracking gestures.

Software:

The Samsung Galaxy S4 rolls out with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean along with Samsung custom TouchWiz user interface. To stay ahead of the competition, Samsung has added a wide range of innovative features like Smart Scrolling, Eye tracking, Air View Mode, S Translator, S Health, IR blaster, Smart Rotate, S Voice Drive, etc.

We've seen some of these features earlier on the Galaxy S3 and Note 2, but the ones on the S4 are much more advanced.

Performance:

The S4 comes equipped with a powerful Exynos 5 Octa 5410 chipset featuring a quad-core 1.6 GHz Cortex A15 processor and a quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex A7 processor. That gives you an incredible eight cores of processing power. Additional hardware on the chipset includes PowerVR SGX 544 MP3 graphics, 2 GB of RAM and internal storage of 16/32/64 GB.

Users will also be able to increase the memory capacity of the phone by inserting a microSD card of up to a maximum capacity of 64 GB. Unsurprisingly, the phone delivers an extremely fast and snappy performance thanks to its top-notch hardware. On the battery front, you get a 2600 mAh battery which according to the company should get you through the day easily.

Pricing and Availability Details:

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is set to reach markets starting from the end of April. In the UK, the phone is expected to go on sale on 26th April with all the leading operators in the country.

Samsung will be aggressively pushing the device across the globe as it has scheduled to release the handset in 155 countries through 327 worldwide network operators. Unfortunately, the company didn't offer any details regarding the pricing of the device.
