Galaxy S4 - Features Preview

We can always count on Samsung to give us something interesting and incredible with each of their product launches. With the internet abuzz with activity about the upcoming launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4, there have been a number of rumors doing the rounds of the internet about what to expect form Samsung’s hot seller’s successor.

Fortunately, one of the rumors has been put to rest as a Samsung employee recently confirmed in an interview with the New York Times that the S4 would indeed include an eye tracking mechanism that would enable users to scroll through pages and flip across pages using eye movements.

While we’re certain that there won’t be a headset involved in the eye tracking mechanism, experts have been suggesting that the front facing camera could do the trick for tracking eye movements, which has raised questions about the amount of battery usage expected from keeping eye tracking enabled.

Samsung has always been happy to allow you to disable certain features on their smartphones, so there’s a good chance that we’ll be able enable and disable the feature as and when we see fit.

Talk on the internet suggests that CMOS image sensors on the front facing camera use very little power and shouldn’t be too battery intensive, however when the CPU processes that information for the eyes, it could potentially turn out to be a battery waster and a resource hog.

Samsung however has always ensured that their technology doesn’t hit such snags, so expect them to come up with an interesting solution for this potential problem. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has done extremely well in the market for Samsung, and while the S3 Mini was initially dissed by many consumers and reviewers, the uptake for the model among the female demographic has been relatively high.

Many people were shy to adopt a product like the S3 and the Note II, therefore the ones who backed out because of the device being a little too large to carry around, the S3 Mini seemed like a perfect substitute. The iPhone 5 sales, while reportedly very strong, did suffer due to the S3 and S3 Mini doing so well in the market.

It remains to be seen however, how the iPhone 5S which has been slated for an August lunch will fare to the S4’s launch which is due in the next week or so. The eye tracking technology of Galaxy S4 could potentially be a massive thing for gaming companies to try and adopt, games that follow your eyes and then initiate events could be very fun to play.

While some scheming marketers might actually think about having pop-ups that follow your eye movements around as you try and avoid them! The possibilities for everything with eye tracking and seemingly endless, but we’ll just see how this goes. Stay tuned guys.
