Virus attacks have become a serious threat today and are major concerns affecting data security and safety of confidential information. These viruses generally create a backdoor in an infected computer which can be used for any purpose by miscreants.

Computers get infected in different ways such as use of infected external pen drives, visiting P2P free download networks and browsing sites infected by viruses. There are however various steps that you can take to prevent falling prey to such virus attacks and our aim in this article will be to make you aware of such steps.

Preventing Virus Attacks

1. Install Anti Virus Software: The first thing you should do is install a strong anti virus software which will give protection against viruses, trojans, malware and spyware. The software should be able to check hard disks, attachment in mails and files being downloaded from internet.

2. ISPs & Automatic Updates: Select an ISP which has good anti phishing and anti spam system in place. Additionally, make sure to update your operating system as well as other security softwares installed on computer.

3. Mail attachments: Many times email attachments bring viruses with them and your anti virus software should be able to detect such attachments. You will have to avoid opening mails with attachments from people you do not know and also those received in instant messages having extensions such as .scr, .vbs, .lnk and .bin.

4. Viruses in mobile phones: Virus attacks on mobile phones are still not very common but there is risk of infection. If you browse internet on your mobile device and your phone gets infected then if you connect it to your computer the virus will get transferred to your computer as well. There are virus softwares presently available which have the option to check mobile devices connected to a computer and can help in removing the infection from your mobile device.

5. Disable windows installer: Many virus software after getting downloaded start to automatically install if the windows installer service is available. You can prevent such automatic installation of malicious software by disabling the windows installer service. You can disable the windows installer service by going to start menu and selecting run command, then type services.msc and press enter. In the window that opens double click on windows installer and select disabled in the startup type option box, click on apply and then press OK.

We will conclude here by saying that nowadays virus attacks are multi layered and some of the worms are known to tunnel through multiple programs to search for vulnerabilities in your PC and then these vulnerabilities are misused by hackers. In such situation it is very important that you take steps to protect your computer using various measures we have mentioned in the above sections.

To start with you need to install a good anti virus software and back up your data at regular intervals so that even if your computer stops working due to virus problems, you will have all your data to restore onto some other machine until your computer is cleaned of the infection.
