The tablet PC or computer industry has become one of the hottest electronic gadget markets in recent history. At the forefront of this special form of mobile internet communications is the Apple iPad.
However this article concerns one of Apple's arch rivals – Google, and their newest foray into retail therapy, simply called Nexus.
In the Beginning There Was...
There have been two incarnations of the Google tablet PC. In June 2012, Google revealed the7-inch Nexus tablet, that was developed in partnership with Asus. It was the first tablet PC to have an Android operating system.
The Nexus 7 came preloaded with Android version 4.1 also known as “Jelly Bean”. This upgraded version of Google' Android 4.0 operating system called “Ice Cream Sandwich” corrected a lot of the issues with the Android software – such as lag.
Google's Nexus 7 was chocked full with Google applications including, Google Maps, Google+ and YouTube. It also featured a software program aptly named Google Now. This cool feature acts as responsive and intuitive personal assistant, in much the same way as Siri does for Apple's iPad.
Although the Nexus 7 doesn't have cellular phone capabilities, it does offer WiFi as a means to connect to the internet. A later model of the Nexus 7, released in November 2012, does have cellular capabilities.
Bigger Display Equals Bigger Demand
On the back of the success of the Nexus 7, Google partnered with Samsung for its next venture – the Nexus 10. The 10-inch display tablet PC market is much more lucrative than the 7-inch display market.Nexus 10 has the upgraded “Jelly Bean” Android 4.2 software operating system pre-installed. This version of Android supports multi-users. Therefore, more than one person can use the device by logging in with their own individual accounts. It allows for a single downloaded app to be shared by all users on one single device.
Another great feature of the Android 4.2 software is gesture typing. This brilliant technology allows the user to slide their finger across the keyboard to type – essentially”drawing” out specific words. It's fun and time-saving gadget technology that has revolutionized on-screen keyboards.
Google Now Means Just That – Now!
Google Now is Google's clever answer to Apple's Siri. The information that Google Now provides is artfully displayed in a card format. The latest version of Google Now on Nexus 10 includes cards for restaurants and concerts as well as ones previously installed, including appointments and weather cards.Nexus 10's Very Special Specifications
Along with the advanced Android 4.2 operating system, the Nexus 10 came with some pretty admirable hardware specifications. The 1.7 GHz dual-core processor rivals some desktop PCs. It also comes with 2 GB Ram as standard, with either 16GB or 32GM of storage space.The 10.1 inch display has an amazing resolution of 2560 x 1600 dpi which, as of its release date, was better than any other tablet PC in circulation.
No Rest for the Internet Technology Giants
Rumours abound that there are plans to release a second generation of the Nexus 7 in July of this year. The new version will supposedly have a higher screen resolution and thinner casing.
