3 Places Your Phone Signal May Need a Boost

We all love the idea of ‘getting away from it all’ — shutting down the e-mail, turning off our phones, and just being somewhere remote, relaxing, and restoring. In fact, the degree of health we enjoy is affected in large part by the balance we seek between work and play.

In this 24/7 world, it’s tough to find that balance unless you can effectively ‘unplug’ for anywhere from a few hours a day to a few days a week.

However, the converse is also true: sometimes, your mental health — if not your physical as well — may depend on being able to get a signal to and from your mobile phone. Lots of places are ‘dead zones’ that you wouldn’t normally think of as such; here are three you might not suspect would give you trouble, but may be a cause of hassle…or worse.

Medical Facilities

When you’re around a medical facility, you often could use a mobile signal booster. Yes, we know you know that, in most cases, mobile phone use is frowned upon inside hospital walls — and we’re not encouraging you to buck that rule; there are good reasons for this that go beyond the risk you’ll disturb patients!

Mobile phones can interfere with other electronic devices, such as the monitors that track everything from your pulse rate and respiration to oxygen intake and heart efficiency. If you or a loved one is receiving that care and being monitored that way, you know and appreciate why medical personnel don’t want your mobile phone signal interjecting itself into that mix of numbers.

Rules aside, though, most of us have discovered that even in permitted-use areas around medical facilities, it can be tough to get enough ‘bars’ on your phone to make a clear mobile call of any length.

This is not a comforting thought if you’re the one standing outside an ER or ICU trying to get through to a relative who needs to know news. In those cases, you’d probably be willing to do just about anything for a mobile signal booster to let your call ‘jump the barriers’ and have a clearer, faster transmission.

Into the Wild…Suburbs?

It’s true: the suburbs can be wild places, indeed, for unsuspecting city dwellers — especially if those city dwellers try to use their mobile phones in certain neighbourhoods! We all know the frustration of being in the middle of civilisation yet having our phone act as if we’ve dropped off the atlas into the middle of the wilderness.

This happens to everyone: sources indicate that as many as 2 out of 3 users experience mobile phone troubles (dropped calls, poor reception) when they get out of their own neighbourhoods and/or in ‘far-flung’ places.

It’s the stuff of comedy routines, but it’s not really funny: you’re trying to connect with long-lost friends and make arrangements to meet for lunch or coffee — but then, you take a wrong turn and get lost.

That feels bad enough; pulling out your mobile phone to check in, then being unable to, is worse. You end up playing the part of intrepid explorer, finding your way again…but it can throw a spanner in your plans and make you feel ‘marooned’ even in an area that’s not all that remote.

Noise, Noise, Noise

Mobile phones are a great means to stay connected at all kinds of public functions: games, concerts, graduations, picnics or fairs…the list goes on. But they aren’t quite the same as having the person standing next to you!

Sometimes, there’s no volume level high enough to let you fully hear and be heard in those circumstances; you need a little ‘something extra’ to make your phone powerful enough to ‘cut through’ the interference around it.

These Instances and Many Others…

…probably make want to know if there are ways to boost your mobile phone’s signal or power. The good news is that answer is “yes” — with qualification. There are some trips into legitimately ‘wild’ places where no ‘booster’ will really work. Just be aware of that…and plan accordingly.
