September is set to be a busy month for Samsung, with the Korean manufacturer recently launching its innovative Galaxy Gear smartwatch and its next-generation Galaxy Note 3 phablet.

Often at the forefront of mobile technology, Samsung’s creativity has led to its flagship Galaxy S4 becoming one of the top selling smartphones to come out of 2013, successfully competing against the likes of the iPhone 5 and HTC One.

But what else can we expect to see in terms of all things tech from the Korean firm? We take a look at four of the rumored innovations Samsung is said to be working on.

Rumored Products from Samsung

4K Ultra HD

Creativity and progression is vital for many manufacturers and the 4K Ultra HD video recording capability is the latest smartphone feature to come from Samsung. Referring to any display with a resolution of around 4000 horizontal pixels, 4K is the next step up from 1080p full HD. Originating in television technology, the 4K format has now been incorporated into the Galaxy Note 3 spec sheet.

Mobile Storage

With the sheer quantity of media content being downloaded onto our handsets, it comes as no surprise that many manufacturers have come under fire for providing insufficient mobile memory space. It does however look as though future smartphones are about to get a lot more room for files as Samsung recently announced it is working on new storage technology.

Its 3D Vertical NAND flash memory is an industry first, and is built to offer twice as much storage than existing flash drives. By stacking layers of 16GB memory vertically on top of each, Samsung’s chip increases both capacity and speed of internal storage.

Jeong-Hyuk Choi, Samsung’s senior vice president of flash products and technology, said: “The new 3D V-NAND flash technology is the result of our employees’ years of efforts to push beyond conventional ways of thinking, and pursue more innovative approaches in overcoming the limitations in the design of memory technology.”

Samsung Galaxy S5

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is certainly still whipping up a frenzy as millions of people look to networks like Orange and Vodafone to get their hands on the must-have handset. Yet despite its continuing popularity the mobile world is already focusing on its successor, rumoured to be called the Galaxy S5.

It is being speculated that the new device, said to launch early next year, will trade in the plastic design seen on previous models for a new metal option. According to several Korean national news sites, the S5 could adopt an aluminium body as Samsung looks to keeping abreast of its high-end competitors.

There is also speculation surrounding the next flagship’s camera, as the upcoming handset could boast a 16 megapixel offering. This would be upgraded from the Galaxy S4’s 13 megapixel camera, and it is believed the S5’s lens may be further bolstered by Optical Image Stabilization technology.

Flexible Display

Flexible displays are something that Samsung is rumoured to have in the works, with the technology making the supple screens near enough indestructible. Created from light-emitting organic materials, flexible displays are substantially stronger and thinner than conventional glass screens. They could make their way onto the market within the next five years.

Although it could take some time for them to become truly flexible, it’s likely that in the future this technology will become so advanced that we’ll be able to roll up or fold our handsets.
Samsung is clearly continuing to raise the bar when it comes to smartphone technology, and the possibility of these four upcoming innovations is an interesting look into the future of mobile.
