The mobile phone market in India has been growing rapidly over the past decade. With devices using the Android operating system taking up 91 percent of India’s market share, Windows taking 5.4 percent, and Apple a mere 2.3 percent, the overwhelmingly most popular operating system is Android.

There are many brands that use the Android operating system, and in India the phones with the larger five-inch screens are much more popular than phones with small screens. While some markets prefer smaller screens and more discreet phones, the India marketplace clearly prefers large screens and clear visibility. Smartphones in general are gaining popularity in India.

Gionee Mobile

One new phone debuting this year and gaining popularity fast is the Gionee Elife E7. This Android phone is gaining market share in the Indian marketplace because of its slim design, large screen, fast operating system, and high-end camera. Gionee claims the camera in the Elife E7 is the best Android camera available.

Nokia: Made in India

Nokia has a manufacturing plant in India, so individuals concerned with doing business locally prefer to go with mobile devices like Nokia, as do the country's own government programs. Nokia is already one of the top mobile device vendors. The Nokia Lumia is a big seller in India already because it offers what the marketplace demands. This windows phone handset has been selling well.

Samsung: Most Popular in India

A survey shows that Samsung is the most popular mobile device brand in India in 2013. Samsung's popularity varies by region of India, but the phones are very attractive, with large screens and dependable software.

LG Optimus: Popular for Smaller Phone

The South-Korean manufacturer LG is popular in India. The LG Optimus has a smaller screen size than many mobile devices in India, and can never be number one in that marketplace because of the screen size, but these phones are still smart and savvy options for Indian shoppers who want something just a little smaller. These phones run off of the Android operating system as well. LG is reportedly more popular in Mumbai than even Samsung.

Huawei IDEOS

The Huawei IDEOS is a brand of mobile device available in India. This device is an Android-powered smartphone.

Micromax: Fast Growing Market-Share Mobile Device

Micromax is an Indian electronic company that produces smartphones. These mobile devices are quickly catching up to Samsung in popularity in India. Combining the new company's local roots with its innovative designs, Micromax has a chance of becoming most popular, especially if this company gets on board with the government bids that Nokia has a chance with. One of Micromax's selling points is the battery backup offered: a full 30 days.

The Affordable Karbonn

Karbonn smartphones are trending in the Indian marketplace because of their affordability. Two-year contracts on phones in India are not the norm like they are in the United States; therefore more affordable smartphones are more popular in India. Sometimes this is at the expense of quality. Karbonn smartphones retail for around $53 USD, but provide smartphone access in India.
