There is common recognition of the problem of nuisance telephone calls. The question is how to deal with this effectively rather than simply pay lip service to the issue. Everyone should be able to expect some protection from intrusive calls.
A cross-party parliamentary report reaffirms that the service of helping prevent nuisance calls should be free. The technology required to do this is in place with users able to identify who is calling and block them as appropriate. Liberal MP Mike Crockart expressed his disappointment that BT felt it needed to charge for the privilege and felt it was sheer profiteering.
It says that there is an increasing trend of people not bothering to answer their phones for fear of who is on the other end; that cannot be right. An effective blocking system in these circumstances will once again restore people’s confidence in the service a telephone provides.
That does not mean that everyone wants to block every other call. It is a matter of having control and technology does allow an effective blocking system right across the board if everyone within the system is working to the same end.
If every time a call comes into a telephone for the first time it needs verification or it is blocked from everyone within the network, nuisance calls will soon diminish drastically because everyone will be working to clean up the lines. Of course you will need your friends and family to verify themselves initially, but that is an exercise that will take seconds, and will only happen the first time they call.
Simple multiplication identifies how quickly and effectively this will work. Someone in a ‘blocking community’ of 1000 who has to block calls individually and does so once a month will have blocked 12 numbers by the end of the year. Someone who has the other 999 people in the network also doing the same thing and automatically having that number blocked to everyone else will find they have a very effective blocking system indeed.
