Samsung Has Finally Announced its First Smartphone Running Tizen OS

Giving users another option apart from Android, Samsung has announced its first smartphone that runs on Tizen platform, the Samsung Z. Initially the company is launching the Samsung Z in Russia (sometime in Q3). Till now Samsung only uses Tizen for its Gear 2 smartwatch, and recently announced an update to convert the original Galaxy Gear from Android to Tizen.

The specs are pretty decent, as the device is powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core processor and 2GB RAM and sports a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display (though only in 1280×720 resolution).
Another feature that Samsung has included is the fingerprint sensor that has so far been exclusive to the Galaxy S5. It’s not the low-end spec many had expected from Tizen.

DJ Lee, president of global sales and marketing for Samsung reported in a blog post that “Samsung is committed to enhancing the mobile experience of consumers with innovation that is both personal and unique to their needs.”

He further adds “The Samsung Z integrates the power and adaptability of the Tizen platform, enabling users to browse the web faster and utilize applications more effectively.”

In terms of specs it is comparable to Android smartphones, but we have to see how it performs in terms of availability of apps and simplicity of user interface.

Samsung is expecting to ship 15% Tizen devices of the company’s mobile shipments per year. A potential threat to Google’s Android where Samsung makes up 65% of all Android devices, according to data from analytics firm Localytics.
