IPad Apps
In this age of mobile technology, sports fans can constantly stay connected to their favorite teams, leagues and sports. Phones and tablets have become information centers and mini-televisions. Of the thousands of apps available in Apple’s store, here are the 7 best iPad apps for sports fans.

1. NFL ’12: (Price: $4.99)

Football fans will want to download the NFL’s official app for 2012, NFL ’12, as the professional football season kicks off.  Fans can follow all the games on Sunday through the app’s league-wide scoreboard, or they can focus on one match-up.  The app also has a news feed, although it is not as current as other apps.  In between games, users can adjust their fantasy team in the NFL’s official fantasy league.

2. MLB.Com At-Bat: (Price: $14.99 per year, or $2.99 per month)

MLB.com At-Bat, which is Major League Baseball’s official app, has all the information fans want: schedules, statistics, news and standings.  It also has video highlights.  Most importantly, though, fans can watch any game, including out-of-market ones, on their iPad with MLB.com At-Bat.  For just $2.99/mo., this can be downloaded just in time for the playoffs.

3. Race Fan Ultimate: NASCAR: (Price: $2.99)

Race Fan Ultimate: NASCAR was built to be the premier NASCAR app.  It tracks the Cup, Nationwide and Truck series and will show the current leader board and upcoming schedules.  What the app lacks in video feed, it makes up for by streaming an audio commentary of every race.

4. Boxing News Magazine: (Price: free)

Boxing fans do not have an app that rivals the NFL’s or MLB’s in terms of quality.  Boxing News Magazine’s app, which goes by the same name, is the best they can get.  Boxing News Magazine focuses on sharing journalists’ reports and previews of matches, instead of statistics and rankings.

5. Golf Channel: (Price: free)

Golf Channel’s model is similar to Boxing News Magazine: it is intended to complement the Golf Channel.  This app brings some of the station’s shows to viewers who are not near a television.  It also has suggestions from golf instructors.

6. WatchESPN: (Price: varies with cable subscription)

WatchESPN is built to bring the television-viewing experience to iPad owners.  With it, users can stream any ESPN coverage they subscribe to, either through cable or satellite service, on their iPad and iPhone.  Every sport and show that airs on EPSN partners, including ESPN3 and ESPNU, can be streamed on the iPad.  Although the app is free, viewers must pay for ESPN coverage on their television.

7. TeamStream: (Price: free)

TeamStream brings users more obscure news sources on their favorite teams or leagues.  After selecting the teams they want to follow, users are given news stories from all over the web.  TeamStream is especially good at finding pieces from blogs and local papers, although it also follows stories on twitter and the Bleacher Report.  Users can share anything on this app via Twitter or Facebook.
