It’s getting close to that time of year when Apple releases its new generation of iPhone. This time, it’s the iPhone 5 with the new iOS6. The early adopters upgrade as soon as they can to show the world that they have the newest gadget from one of the most innovative companies.

Each new is different, but not necessarily better. It all depends on what you actually want from your . With the 3GS, 4 and 4S models still widely available and in working order, getting older i Phone deals instead of waiting for the newest release could be better for you.

• The design is similar across S
When the first was released in 2007, one of the major selling points was its physical design. It was original and innovative, but most new s now look very similar. The screen size and the shape of the case vary slightly.

Customers still buy s for their look and assumed social status rather than the technical specifications. If you are interested in an for its aesthetic value, get a contract for an older version rather than waiting for the newest release.

• Siri doesn’t work as well in the UK
The idea of Siri was revolutionary. A voice recognition system that makes educated suggestions based on what it has heard. It promised to be one of the most ground-breaking phone and internet navigation systems.

Unfortunately, Siri was demonstrated in the US. UK users were disappointed when Siri did not work in the way it was shown. To get UK business information or directions, the user has to ask Siri to use Google for information. As the 4S’s major feature is the Siri function, it may satisfy your needs just to get an 4.

• Customers have already tried and tested them
No new technology comes without its faults. Microsoft’s new Xbox 360 had manufacturing issues, where it overheated and malfunctioned. This was known as the ‘red ring of death’. After many complaints, Microsoft fixed the hardware and now the consoles are reliable. Apple had a similar issue with the 4.

It was one of the most anticipated technological releases of 2010, but when customers started using it, the antennae did not function properly. Some customers had connection issues when the phone was held by it sides.

Apple finally admitted their mistake and fixed it by sending out bumper cases to increase signal connection. Being an early adopter and buying into technology as soon as it is released always has an element of risk. By buying an earlier model of the , the kinks will have already been worked out.

• Contracts will be cheaper
As with any new phone model upgrade, the older ones are now cheaper to come by. Comparing the older deals can get you much better value for money. If you think that an is too expensive, simply wait for the 5 to be released.

Soon, the prices for the 4 and 4S will decrease. You will only have iOS5, but ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. The earlier s work just as well as they did when they were released and now come with more affordable deals.
