Can The HTC One X+ See Off The Samsung Galaxy Note II?

The HTC One X+ is the new upgrade of the HTC One. The Samsung Galaxy Note II is one of the best phones of 2012 and won many “Gadget of The Year” awards. So how do these two stack up – one of the best of HTC against one of the best of Samsung?

Let’s have a look on the basis of appearance, the display, the storage, the processor, and the operating system.

The Appearance

The Samsung Galaxy Note II has dimensions of 151.1 x 80.5 x 9.4 as compared to the HTC One X+ at 134.4 x 69.9 x 8.9. The Note II is weightier at 183g compared to 135g. Therefore, the Samsung is bigger and heavier, as you would expect from a phone with such a big screen. The HTC One X+ looks exactly the same as the One X.

All of the modifications have been made internally. Apart from that, the only other difference is that the One X+ is only available in black. The phone comes with a polycarbonate unibody with nice contours and is generally aesthetically pleasing. Its build quality is distinctly premium and it looks and feels great.

The Galaxy S3 is a bit plasticky for the premium end of the market, and the Galaxy Note II, in my opinion, looks very similar to the Galaxy S3, just bigger. It has the same chrome trim and curvature around and is quite angular in its curves. The phone looks nice, but the plastic from Samsung is a bit of a shame, in my opinion.

It has a 5.5 inch screen, which, at the time of manufacture, was the biggest on a smart phone, and that dominates the front of the device. The dimensions make it quite cumbersome. It feels nice in the hand and is good to operate, but finding a pocket for it to fit in may be an issue. The build quality is extremely good on the Note II. It’s solid, but the plastic does, in my opinion, let it down.

Just because of the materials used, and the build quality that is therefore perceptible, I would go for the HTC One X+ on appearance and design.

Display

The HTC One X+ has a 4.7-inch Super IPS LCD2 capacitive multi-touch screen at a pixel resolution of 1280 x 720. The pixel per inch density is 312 and the clarity is superb. The picture is excellent for all types of media including streaming, movies, browsing, and playing games. The images are crisp, bright, and impressive.

Galaxy Note II, with its 5.5-inch screen, is very impressive on this front too. It has a Super AMOLED 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and comes in at 267 pixels per inch. The quality of picture is amazing on this Note II. The colors are vibrant and the contrasts are, frankly, amazing. The display looks easily as good as the HTC One X+, but it is larger so in this front, I give the win to the Samsung Galaxy Note II.

Storage

Both devices come in 32GB and 64GB options. The Galaxy Note II also has a 16GB variant. In addition to this, Samsung include a microSD slot that takes cards up to 64GB. The HTC One X+ does not have this benefit. Therefore, on storage capacity, Samsung Galaxy Note II wins again.

The Processor

Both devices benefited from industry-leading processors at the time of phone release. The HTC One X+ has the Tegra 3 AP37 processor at 1.7GHz. The Note II benefits from a Quad Core 1.6GHz processor with 2GB of RAM, which is double that on the HTC One X.

Both are fast processors, perfectly adequate for superb performance on the Android platform. Everything is smooth, fast, and responsive. The Galaxy Note II stylus is accurate and high performing. On the processor, they’re difficult to split, and so I give a draw.

The Operating System

Both devices were shipped with the latest Android version at the time. Therefore, they’re difficult to split again on the operating system. They have their own skins of the same basic interface but are similar. Therefore, I give a draw again.

Conclusion

Both phones are excellent, top-end, premium phones of 2012. Both offer good advantages over their predecessors and are premium, high specification phones. I judge though that the Note II is the better out of the two.
