Is It Worth The Upgrade? The Sony Xperia Z Vs. The Sony Xperia Z1In January 2013, Sony released the Xperia Z, 8 months later in September they released the Xperia Z1 and many of those who bought the Z were more than happy to fork out a bit of cash so they could get their hands on a nice new upgrade, but is it worth it?
Is the Z1 so different from the Z that it warrants the extra cash being spent on it? We’ll take a look now so you have more of an idea as to whether you should stick with your current Xperia Z, or upgrade it to the Z1.
The design of the Z is quite minimalistic and it’s been made to look that way so it appears thinner than it really is. What really sets this phone out from others is that it’s water proof, which is something we have all been waiting for, for quite some time.
Almost all of us have dropped our phones in a puddle or spilt liquid on them, so its great news we can now get a handset that won’t break after coming into contact with a bit of water. The Xperia Z can withstand being in a meter of water for up to half an hour, but you will have to make sure all of the plastic flaps are shut so water doesn’t get in.
The Xperia Z1 is a newer version of the Z, but it feels like it’s improved slightly too. The handset is bigger and bulkier than its younger brother, but it also seems a little more sophisticated in terms of design too. If you don’t want a heavy phone, you may find the Xperia Z1 a little disagreeable, but its saving grace is the slight curvature that the metallic frame has, and this makes it so much nicer to pick up and hold.
The Xperia Z1 also has a 5 inch screen, but if you view it from an angle you will not be disappointed as Sony has decided to do something about the glitch. What’s more is the LCD screen is able to display richer colors, making viewing pictures a lot more special.
Thanks to the Snapdragon 800, you will get a much smoother usage out of the Xperia Z1 that leaves you with virtually no lag, if any at all. You may still experience a few delays from apps that are running in the background, but there’s not much Sony can do about it. If you find you have an issue, you may want to think about removing some of the apps so your phone can work faster for you.
Compared to the 13 mega pixel camera on the Xperia Z, this camera truly is something else. The sheer quality of the picture has dramatically improved, and shots taken in low light aren’t bad, but there’s still a little room for improvement.
The camera on the Xperia Z isn’t a bad one, but it’s not something to shout out about either, as its picture quality isn’t that great and it can be somewhat inconsistent. When it comes to using the camera, there are a few new features on the Xperia Z1, including the all-important app that will let you post your pictures directly on to Facebook, but unfortunately the camera isn’t always consistent when it comes to picture quality.
Issues that the Xperia Z had have not completely disappeared as there are still a few problems with the display, but it’s not something that will ruin your viewing experience completely, you’ll just have to make sure you look directly at the images, rather than at an angle.
The Xperia Z is a little smaller, and it costs a bit less too, but if you’re not looking for a smaller phone and you want a handset that feel safe and secure to pick up and hold, then you may be more than happy to pay just that little bit more for the Sony Xperia Z1.

Taking a Look at Both Handsets: Sony Xperia Z Vs. The Sony Xperia Z1
If we take a look at both handsets they appear to be quite similar, especially if you’re not familiar with Sony phones, but the fact of the matter is that they differ quite dramatically in some respects, and they may just make you re-think your plan to stick with, or buy a cheaper Xperia Z.Size and Design
When it comes to the size of the handsets, the Xperia Z looks just like previous Sony handsets that have been released in the last year or so, but if you but the Z next to an earlier handset you will see there’s quite a bit of difference. The design of the Z is quite minimalistic and it’s been made to look that way so it appears thinner than it really is. What really sets this phone out from others is that it’s water proof, which is something we have all been waiting for, for quite some time.

The Screens
When it comes to the 5 inch screen, with 441 ppi (Pixels per inch) the Xperia Z gives you quite a crisp clear look. If you do happen to look at the phone from an angle, the quality will be compromised, which is a problem if you want to look at a lot of pictures, but it’s not a huge deal. The Xperia Z1 also has a 5 inch screen, but if you view it from an angle you will not be disappointed as Sony has decided to do something about the glitch. Comparing the Processors
Way back in January 2013, when the Xperia Z was first released, Sony was criticized for using a processor that some thought was on its way out. The Snapdragon S4 Pro does quite a nice job, thank you very much, but it does seem to be somewhat lacking when you compare it to the Z1.Thanks to the Snapdragon 800, you will get a much smoother usage out of the Xperia Z1 that leaves you with virtually no lag, if any at all. You may still experience a few delays from apps that are running in the background, but there’s not much Sony can do about it. The Cameras
The Xperia Z1 may appear just slightly better than the Xperia Z, until you hear about the camera, and then the Z1 appears so much better than its younger brother. The Z1 comes with a very impressive 20.7 mega pixel camera, which happens to be a lot better than some of the top of the range handsets that are out at the moment.Compared to the 13 mega pixel camera on the Xperia Z, this camera truly is something else. The sheer quality of the picture has dramatically improved, and shots taken in low light aren’t bad, but there’s still a little room for improvement.

Which One Will You Choose?
You may already know which Xperia model you’re going to choose, the Z1 is a bit of an improvement on the Xperia Z, as its works faster, has a better camera and a classier and bulkier design.Issues that the Xperia Z had have not completely disappeared as there are still a few problems with the display, but it’s not something that will ruin your viewing experience completely, you’ll just have to make sure you look directly at the images, rather than at an angle.
