The Rise of Remote Working

It’s little wonder that telecommuting is becoming more popular year on year. As we become more connected and more heavily reliant on technology - smartphones get more sophisticated, 4G networks expand, and super-fast broadband becomes commonplace – we often have all we need to do our jobs at home.

But there’s more to it than simply being able to do it. There’s the appeal of avoiding the daily commute – it’s estimated that many of us spend over an hour commuting to work every day. Remote working also helps us avoid unnecessary office distractions.

It’s even better for the environment. And even if you’re a high-level enterprise, advancements in Remote RDP, or remote desktop protocols, mean that allowing your employees access to sensitive and mission-critical data is easier and safer than ever.

And studies have shown that remote working, or telecommuting as it’s often known, can enhance productivity and it has been adopted by more and more businesses. Between 2005 and 2011 the number of telecommuters in America reportedly increased by 73 per cent according to the Telework Research Network.

They also speculated that as much as half of the nation’s total workforce has a job that is compatible with telecommuting. It’s easy to see how, with many roles now easily performed with little more than a computer and a phone.

There are barriers to overcome with telecommuting, however. Despite the obvious benefits of fewer commutes and more ‘home time’, workers are concerned that they will be perceived differently if they work from home.

They believe they are more likely to be passed up for promotions and to miss important meetings. Some employers will understandably be wary of letting their employees out of their sight. But maintaining contact and using new software can help manage and keep tabs on remote workers so their productivity doesn't dip.

Employers tend to demand flexibility of their workers and now in the modern workplace flexibility is going to be something they’ll have to provide. The culture is changing and telecommuting will allow companies to hire the best employees no matter where they are in the world.
